The short, dry, stilted and to the point definition of a Short Story is a work of fiction that is typically between 1,500 and 20,000 words in length. It is a narrative that typically has a plot, characters, and a theme. Short stories can be written in any genre, such as romance, science fiction, mystery, fantasy, and more. When not purely for entertainment a short story is often used to teach a moral or explore a particular aspect of a character or situation in a concise manner.
A far more interesting definition of a Short Story, is a story that captures the imagination and transports you into other lands, dimensions and worlds! The sky is the limit when writing fiction and it should be a delightful passion to write as well as to read!
